Who is Cleopatra?
Cleopatra VII, born in 69 BC, became Queen of Egypt at the young age of seventeen. During her time of exile (her younger brother Ptolemy XIII and sister Arsinoe had tried to get rid of her), Cleopatra cunningly had herself delivered into the palace in Alexandria where Julius Caesar was staying. She was 22. After some battles in the city itself, with help from Caesar and his Roman soldiers, Ptolemy was defeated and Cleopatra was placed back on the throne that was rightfully hers. She was then forced to marry her other brother Ptolemy. Cleopatra had one child, a son Caesarion, by Caesar. In 45 BC, Cleopatra and her son sailed to Rome to visit Caesar. Her lover and leader in Rome was killed in 44 BC, splitting the Roman empire between Caesar's nephew Octavian and his friend Marc Antony. Cleopatra and Antony formed an alliance, and eventually became lovers. They had three children together: Alexander Helios & Cleopatra Selene (twins) and Ptolemy Philadelphos. Octavian declared war on Cleopatra, and following that was the Battle of Actium where the Egyptian fleet was defeated. Cleopatra and Antony escaped unharmed. A year later, Octavian claimed Egypt as a part of Rome and after his arrival in Alexandria, he defeated Antony. Antony was delivered to Cleopatra where he died in her arms. After his death, Cleopatra was captured by Octavian, but not wanting to be paraded through the streets of Rome as a conquest of war, she plotted her own death. It is believed she killed herself with the venomous bite of an asp in her arm. Cleopatra VII, one of the few female rulers of the country, was the last Pharaoh of Egypt.
