Summary
One of my favourite movies from the 1980s, "Romancing the Stone" has it all! The wonderful Kathleen Turner and a dashing Michael Douglas team up in this wildly adventurous and hilarious romantic film. Kathleen Turner plays romance novelist Joan Wilder who finds herself travelling to Colombia with a treasure map she was sent that will save her kidnapped sister's life. Accidentally getting onto the wrong bus and heading into the jungle rather than the city of Cartegna, where she is supposed to meet kidnappers Ira and Ralph (played by Zack Norman and Danny Devito) to give them the map, Joan Wilder escapes bad-guy Zolo with the help of fortune hunter Jack Colton (Michael Douglas).
Jack discovers the map and convinces Joan that they should beat the kidnappers to the treasure rather than handing the map over to them. Little do they know, they have been followed by kidnapper Ralph ever since he saw Joan get onto the wrong bus. Joan and Jack eventually run into Juan, a drug smuggler who is crazy about Joan Wilder's books and allows them the use of his getaway car. Throughout the course of the movie Joan and Jack fall in love ... but soon find themselves, literally, on opposite sides of the river! Even the ending of this movie is packed with adventure...crocodiles, treasure, rescuing Joan's sister, and of course, a nice happy reunion that leaves room for the sequel, "Jewel of the Nile"!
